Cosmic Queries is a solid overview of what science currently knows of the origins of life, the origins of the universe and the laws that govern them. Those who enjoyed Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos will find much of the same material explained in more detail but unfortunately without the elan that animated the series.The proper demographic is tweeners and young teens. There are no equations to muddle a young reader and the text remains at a middle schooler level.I’m not sure if it’s because the book was edited and published by National Geographic but some parts read like an article from National Geographic’s magazine for kids. Tyson’s characteristic charisma only faintly comes through.Because of this, it’s unlikely to spark a scientific interest in kids who aren’t already interested in astronomy. But those kids who can’t get enough of Cosmos or Tyson’s other books for youth will enjoy exploring these topics in more depth.The science is solid, the prose is written so that a twelve year old can understand and the questions are some of the most interesting things that humankind can ponder. For those with scientifically inclined children Cosmic Queries is an excellent choice. If it had more of Tyson and less of National Geographic it would have a larger readership. As it is, it is a good but not particularly distinctive book. Who was overseeing this Kindle release? The formatting is not correct on my Kindle Fire 8" and cannot be enlarged at all. Can I get my money back? Can anyone fix this?[Edit] I received an email from Amazon tonight inviting me to download a corrected version of this book. I'm happy to say it is now correctly formatted. I have raised my rating to *** and may raise it higher now that I'm actually able to read the book. I guess I should thank Amazon for fixing this, but I won't. Why should I thank you for doing what you should have done in the first place? Anyway, it appears to be fixed for Kindle readers.
