Ebook About
The captivating story of the famed Savoy Hotel’s founders, told through three generations—and one hundred years—of glamour and high society. For the gondoliers-themed birthday dinner, the hotel obligingly flooded the courtyard to conjure the Grand Canal of Venice. Dinner was served on a silk-lined floating gondola, real swans were swimming in the water, and as a final flourish, a baby elephant borrowed from London Zoo pulled a five-foot high birthday cake. In three generations, the D'Oyly Carte family and London's Savoy Hotel pioneered the idea of the luxury hotel and the modern theater, propelled Gilbert and Sullivan to lasting stardom, made Oscar Wilde a transatlantic celebrity, inspired a P. G. Wodehouse series, and popularized early jazz, electric lights, and Art Deco. Following the history of the iconic Savoy Hotel through three generations of the D'Oyly Carte family, The Secret Life of the Savoy brings to life the extraordinary cultural legacy of the most famous hotel in the world.

Book The Secret Life of the Savoy: Glamour and Intrigue at the World's Most Famous Hotel Review :

This book is poorly written and rife with typos. For example, page 3. Van Cleef & Arples (sic). It’s Arpels, as any good editor would know. Lots of cliches, as in “princely luxury”; “endlessly resourceful”; “hits and misses”. There are better books. Buy those.in fact, it is so bad that it is unreadable. I am returning it to Amazon.
The Savoy can justifiably lay claim to being the world's first luxury hotel. In an era when most hotels, even in London, were drafty, ill heated mausoleums with terrible food, the Savoy boasted central heating, electric light, lifts, in room lavatories and baths, and speaking tubes for ordering room service. It also offered an extraordinary restaurant featuring both French and international cuisine. The hotel reached a new level when the owner was able to recruit César Ritz , most respected manager, and Auguste Escoffier, world's most renowned chef. This new book provides a charming history of the hotel and its many well known clients. The story is told in recounting the lives of three generations of the D'Oyly-Carte family - Richard, who founded the dynasty, his son Rupert and his granddaughter Bridget. It is liberally spiced with tales of murder and drug overdoses in the suites, the sacking of Ritz and Escoffier for embezzlement and internment of Italian staff from all of the empire's hotels during WWII. All in all, a very entertaining read. There are some gaps and glitches, however. The hotel and theatre next door appear spontaneously - like Athena springing full grown from the head of Zeus. There is nothing about the development and construction of these magnificent edifices. The author also makes some curious slips, such as indicating that Sophia Loren could be spotted in the hotel during the Second World War. Unlikely, as she would have been only about six years old. Similarly, it is difficult to accept the author's claim that, at the gala celebrating Queen Elizabeth's coronation, the guests consumed 5000 bottles (!) of Perrier-Jouët Champagne before moving on to Bordeaux, Burgundy, Sherry and Port.Apart from these few flaws, this new history will appeal to those interested in the evolution of a truly grand hotel and the times in which it evolved.
